- Whether every regular driver is actually named
- Whether your mileage still matches what you declared
- Whether your deductible is a number you could pay this week
- Whether cover you stopped needing is still being billed
Before you need it
Four checks that take about ten minutes.
Read the declarations page
One page, near the front. It tells you who is covered, for what, and up to how much. If anything on it is out of date, everything downstream is too.
Check who is listed
A partner who borrows the car weekly, or a newly licensed driver in the house, generally needs to be on the policy. Unlisted drivers are a routine reason claims get argued.
Confirm your mileage
Annual mileage is a rating factor. A commute that ended, or one that started, changes the basis your premium was set on.
Store proof where you can reach it
A photo of your card on your phone, and the claims number saved as a contact. Both are hard to find at the roadside and easy to sort now.

Distance is the cheapest safety feature you have
Most rear-end collisions are a gap problem rather than a reaction problem. Extra space converts a hard stop into an ordinary one, and it costs nothing to leave.
A glance is longer than it feels
At road speed, a couple of seconds looking away covers a surprising distance blind. Setting navigation and music before moving off removes the temptation entirely.
Wet roads change the arithmetic
Braking distances lengthen and grip arrives later than expected, particularly in the first minutes of rain. The adjustment is to slow earlier, not to brake harder.
Tyres and lights do quiet work
Tread depth and correct pressure decide how well the car stops. Working lights decide whether anyone sees you intending to. Both are a two-minute check.
